Sign Language is great for babies!
Find out which baby signs are the best to start with.
Wow! These little bundles of sunshine are so dang intelligent! I can see the gears turning in my son’s eyes every day. He is always learning something new. After studying Early Child Care and working in the field for over five years…. I saw the amazing capabilities children had for learning sign language.
Children experience intense emotions and a desire to communicate long before they learn to talk. Baby signs help them to express themselves before and during language development. In fact, knowing how to sign eat, milk, sleep etc. can avoid many tantrums due to frustration.
As with anything, there are some who share negative outcomes from teaching their children sign language.
Can Baby Signs Delay Speech?
It IS possible your child may find it easier to sign than speak, in the beginning. I have noticed a couple children take a while longer to begin speaking, while reverting to signs. BUT they were also much more advanced in language development and emotional intelligence as they grew older.
Best Signs To Start With
I have had amazing results using baby signs starting around 6 months of age and focusing on basic needs and/or interactions. Here is a list of the baby signs I start with! Click each sign for a video example from babysignlanguage.com
Customize the family and pet signs to the ones that are relevant to your child. Once he/she gets older you can still focus on speech development without the signs to avoid any fear of delay. Check out the baby sign language dictionary to personalize your child’s first signs!
