We’ve all been there….. you’ve discovered a new diet that seems promising. You mark your calendar and mentally prepare for a 6 month transformation!
Two weeks later and things start to get crazy around the house…
You didn’t have time to go shopping…
You’re running late to work after dropping off the kids…
One day off your diet turns into 1 week …… 2….. nope it’s official…
You’re done with the diet and feeling guilty, ashamed, frustrated.
Why is it sooooo hard to stick with diets?
Are you just weak?
It’s simply human nature. Stop expecting to change your lifestyle around all at once.
How long have you been practicing your current habits? What makes you think changing all of those at once would be a successful technique?
How bout we make a pact together right now….. let’s stop setting ourselves up for failure!
Which brings me to the first tip on how to stick to a diet long term…
Stop “Dieting” & Start Eating A Healthy Diet
Please stop trying all these new/old/fad diets!
No seriously, it doesn’t have to be that confusing! I’m going to tell you the one secret factor that makes any diet successfully lead to weight loss….
Eating as many whole foods as possible and limiting sugary/processed foods!
Okay not such a big secret I know 😉 But hey, it’s the truth!
Oh and the reason why most people don’t create any lasting changes on diets?
Because we are looking at this from the wrong perspective. In order to change our health we need to create a lifestyle shift….. not go on some quick fix diet.
A diet is something you’re on or off….
but a healthy diet is something you just have/do ….
no start or end.
You can even enjoy some treats each week without “falling off”.
Instead of bombarding yourself with complex nutritional info and strict guidelines…. start with eating more whole foods and cutting down on the rest.
As soon as I realized eating healthier was a lifestyle change rather than a few weeks/months of restriction, it was actually a weight taken off my shoulders!
Of course everything is easier said than done. Which is why it’s important to…..
Give Up The All Or Nothing Attitude
Too many people get all gung-ho about dieting (or any other new goal) which creates a cycle of complete restriction followed by binging.
Mentally this is also hard to deal with…. going from confident, determined to defeated and hopeless.
It’s self destructive and causes a repeat habit of starting something,
then giving up once everything isn’t “perfect”.
The trick is to work on one small change at a time. In fact, start with something you KNOW you can accomplish each day for one week straight.
For example, add fresh veggies to one meal a day.
Each week you can either stick with the same habit or add a new one if your ready.
TAKE YOUR TIME
And be gentle with yourself if you don’t follow through one day. Remember, we are dropping that all or nothing attitude. Tomorrow is a new day to get your habit done. You don’t need to be perfect!
Have Realistic Goals
With all the cover models and body building contestants showing their ripped abs and lean figures, it’s difficult for women to understand what is realistic.
It’s important to figure out what your priorities are in life and what you are willing to give up for the body you want.
Check out this free info graphic to find out the cost of getting lean
and what it will require for you to get the body you want.
Make Yourself A Priority
Why are women so good at forgetting about themselves? We take on the responsibility to care for everyone as we allow our physical and mental health to degrade.
And to be honest…… this is doing a disservice to everyone we love!
Think about it.
Our children watch and model everything we do (not what we say to do).
Do you want your children to learn that everyone else’s happiness and health
is more important than their own?
Do you want them to always place themselves at the top of the priority list…
YOU ARE NOT SELFISH if you decide to put your health as numeral uno.
In fact, here’s how this form of self competence actually takes better care or your family as well:
- Not only will you be around to watch your children grow up (and grandchildren) but you will give them the life they deserve when in peak mental/physical health
- You will model to everyone in the family, the importance of living a healthy lifestyle
- Children make better decisions about EVERYTHING in life, if one of their core values is self love/care. Set that foundation and save yourself a few heart attacks in the future!
- Relationships in general go much smoother when people are in a healthy state of mind and body.
So do yourself AND your family a favor….. start making your health a priority!
If you’re ready to finally start accomplishing the lifestyle goals you desire
and become the role model you’ve always wanted to be for your children,
you will need to learn very specific skills!
