Will you turn into a manly woman?
No silly! Okay, I get it….
A lot of woman have been getting into body building. So we see these pictures all over the place now…of women with bulging muscles, big shoulders, arms bigger than your husbands!
Many of my clients come to me for weight loss and are completely turned off after I tell them it’s important to have strength training in their program.
Unless you’re putting in 5/6 days a week at the gym….. sometimes twice a day…..eating a VERY strict diet….many times taking hormones…
YOU WONT GET RIPPED LIKE A MAN!
Because you’re not a man 😉 lol! It’s true! Women don’t have even close to the amount of testosterone men do, so these body building women are either dedicating their lives towards this goal or using “other methods”.
But I Want To Lose Weight…
Perfect! Nutrition is going to be the MOST important part of your body transformation, then strength training. Cardio is important as well and should be a part of your program but please stop obsessing over losing weight on the treadmill/elliptical/track.
Here’s what happens when you obsess over that scale…
You notice your body is losing it’s shape quickly the older you get.
You have heard that cardio is “the quickest” way to lose weight so you start running daily for at least an hour.
The pounds start to drop and people notice, giving you complements on your hard work!
You notice that your body (although smaller) still feels lose and saggy…. not the change you were looking for.
Pretty soon you hit a plateau and get soooooooo busy your not able to keep up with all the running.
The pounds fly back on and you end up gaining even more weight than what you started at.
Running is great for your heart but it does NOT help you keep or grow lean muscle.
Why is muscle so important you ask? Studies have shown that our metabolism drops about 2% every decade but they have also found that this correlates with loss of lean muscle mass!
So maybe we should stop using age as an excuse. Maybe we need to get our arses up and strength training to prevent/slow down this process! Like Ernestine Shepherd, the 75 year-old bodybuilding grandma! =O Now she’s dedicated…
Lean muscle mass is metabolically active tissue which means it requires energy just to maintain… AKA your burning fat by just existing lol Another great thing about strength training is that it gives you more of an after burn (or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) than steady state cardio. In fact short bursts of high intensity exercise can cause this as well! So HIIT is another great technique to add to your programs. Studies have shown people burning calories for up to TWO DAYS after HIIT workouts!
Scales Don’t Lie… Or Do They?
Yes, you did lose that weight by doing a bunch of cardio but what exactly was the weight? Well some of it was fat but you also burned away your muscle and lost some water weight. Then, when you weren’t able to keep up the constant long runs….. you gained back all that weight and more in FAT not muscle.
This is the terrible cycle that destroys peoples bodies, confidence and dreams of living a healthy, happy life.
Stop losing weight by becoming a smaller version of the same body and start truly changing your body composition completely!
Focus on building lean muscle to lose fat and begin creating good eating habits. 🙂
